Teaching the values of life to your children
Your step by step guide to the Kan- Du
Human Values Based Martial Arts Program
On a weekly basis your students will be led through a new human
value consisting of two parts. The first part of the program is taught
in the classroom with the students engaged and supported in a fun
discussion and role-play with the Kan – Du instructor and the
class teacher. The second part is the Martial arts based program
where the children are taught very basic age specific techniques
and activities to reinforce the value for that week.
The introductory class consists of a general welcome and overview
of what will be taught to the students throughout their term based
program. Students will be presented with their student cards and
the accompanying responsibilities explained to them. Students will
be also shown examples of the weekly certificates awarded for
attendance and participation, along with the end of term certificate
of achievement awarded for successful completion of the Kan-Du Human
Values Based Martial Arts Program. Students are then given a white
belt for the duration of the class and instructed on correct procedures
for tying the belt and addressing the instructor. The first class
will then involve basic instruction of bowing to acknowledge the
commencement of class, warm up drills, stances and other fun martial
arts based activities. At the completion of the first class will
be a confidence building activity. The students will be given a research
task relating to a particular human value in preparation for
the second class to begin.
During the second class the teaching of human values commences.
During the first part of the program the Kan-Du instructor will
ask the students about the research task given relating to the weekly
value being taught. The student’s examples will be written
on the board and will be used to engage students in a fun and supportive
open discussion including visual role-plays, which truly encapsulate
the student’s attention. This role-play is performed in the
classroom using the students, teacher/s and your Kan-Du instructor. The
teacher will be asked to leave the students examples on the board
for the week to reinforce the value and what it means to them.
The second part of the session is the physical side of the non-contact
martial arts where students are each given a white belt to wear for
the duration of the class. The students are given basic instruction
on forms of non-contact martial arts learning age specific skills
that will help with co-ordination, balance and memory. Using the
values being taught in the first sessions eg Respect, Attitude, Listening,
Determination etc various drills and activities will be taught reinforcing
that week’s human value with continual praise for a job well
done. Each class will conclude on a positive note with a confidence
building activity.
For a student to pass the weekly human value they must, attend each
class with their student card and be involved in the value discussion
for that week. They must then participate in the non-contact martial
arts form to reinforce their learning. The students need to participate
in both aspects of the program every session showing the Kan-Du instructor
they are trying their best and have a good understanding of the value
being taught. Upon completion of each class your student will receive
a weekly certificate. Upon completion of the full term based Kan-Du
program there will be a Kan-Du Human values based martial arts grading
where students will be evaluated and awarded with a “Kan-Du” certificate
of achievement along with a Blue, Jnr first level martial arts
belt for them to keep as a reminder of their accomplishments in the
Kan-Du program.
